Hidden Canopy Treehouses boutique hotel

There’s something about a well designed treehouse and highly personalised experience in it, that adds magic to your holiday and deserves its own post. We felt it with the rustic treehouse lodge in Punta Uva, and again, for very different reasons, in this luxurious ‘B&B’ in Monteverde. And this post will be a bit on the longer side, because there’s so much to say, which still won’t all get said.

But first, an update on my mystery rash. To illustrate the exceptional service at Hidden Canopy, when  I mentioned I’d look at going to the doctor when I got to Manuel Antonio, Jenn immediately arranged for a house call at the treehouse. A much more comfortable experience to put my mind at ease before heading for a pretty remote region after Manuel Antonio.

So Jenn’s ‘go to’ medical team turned up right on finishing my breakfast, inspected me and agreed with Koki’s (our wildlife guide) earlier diagnosis that some untoward spider had been wandering all over my chest and neck and peed on me. Who needs venom when you’re weeing acid? (Margaret suspects it was actually a blister beetle, which we did encounter - either way, same treatment.) Two needles in my bum and a script for cortisone cream, antihistamines and anti inflammatories later I’m hoping for a good outcome quickly. The doctor connected with me on WhatsApp and wants me to send daily pics, and said if I need a doctor for the rest of the trip to contact him and he’ll arrange something for me. Amazing!

But back to the treehouse. Check in itself is an experience, with Jenn seating you in a gorgeous dining area facing floor to ceiling windows over this view, with the beverage of your choice, while she gets to know you a bit, talks you through all things Hidden Canopy and Monteverde. All the while happily accommodating short attention spans distracted by the beautiful hummingbirds in her garden below, or something more exotic and regal flying over the canopy or walking into the field below, which she immediately sets up her scope to find so you can get an amazing view.

The property is on 13 acres of forest, with the stunning main house where we come together with each other and our hosts to enjoy breakfast and happy hour everyday. There are 5 stand alone guest treehouses which are all different and all beautifully designed by Jenn to optimise the natural surrounds, and present amazing attention to detail and great quality features and fittings. Our 2 bedroom tree house is stunning, overlooking forest canopy and the Gulf, with a delightful koi pond below us leading to a walking trail on the property - which we unfortunately didn’t get to do, having left it for our last morning and being waylaid by spider pee.

Vision and quality are obviously part of Jenn’s DNA, extending to organising - well, everything. She has a team of wonderful people who look after you in every respect. From the breakfast and happy hour team committing your preferred beverages to memory; exclusive drivers happy to take you wherever your heart desires; a visiting massage therapist; and awesome wildlife guide Koki. We did 2 morning and 2 night walks with Koki, and could easily have done more. He is an outstanding guide. The housekeeping team turned everything out in style and with creativity, and it was always a pleasure to come back to our house and enjoy the fruits of their labour.

On one occasion we went to dinner at Morpho’s when their internet was down and they were only taking cash. When Margaret said that might be a problem they asked where we were staying. When she said Hidden Canopy they said no worries, Jenn had already called and organised for us to take the bill away and add it to our hotel bill. When she found out it was my birthday while we were there she left a beautiful gift in our house and made special treats for happy hour that day - which she also did for another guest who had a birthday while we were there, and a couple celebrating an anniversary.

A taste of the quality and attention to detail - every day something different
and followed by a sweet treat

Another  example of the attention to detail. There are also magnifying panels in the mirrors in
each bathroom, the mini bar is stocked beautifully, the art work is local and beautiful

Monteverde didn’t disappoint, treating us to some wonderful wildlife and other experiences. It’s a beautiful location, we had an amazing time and I am already planning my next visit!
